Culture Days is a not-for-profit organization that aims to build a "national network of cultural connections devoted to providing Canadians with opportunities to participate in, and appreciate, all forms of arts and culture.” For the past seven years, the last Friday of September has kicked off a three-day national celebration to increase Canadians' “awareness, accessibility, participation, and engagement” in their communities’ vibrant cultural life.
Culture Days celebrations return this year from Friday, September 30th to Sunday, October 2nd, and there are tons of free, participatory arts activities happening across Elgin County for you to participate in!

National Canadian Film Day
A FREE AND FUN EVENT! April 20, 2016 is National Canadian Film Day, a day to throw off the shackles of fear and insecurity, stand together with Canadians from coast to coast and pat ourselves on the back for something other than various ice-related sports and sports-related doughnut shops. It’s a light-hearted intervention for our national consciousness, a wake-up call to anyone who has not yet been exposed to the great cinematic stories we tell one another in this cold, vast country. More: www.canadianfilmday.ca Canada's birthday is coming up JULY 1st (in case you forgot!) and in celebration of that, we thought we'd dig a little into what makes this country so special.
This summer the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games are happening, which means that after 41 days and 3,000 torchbearers, the torch will arrive in Toronto on July 10th for the opening ceremonies!
We are pleased that out of the 130+ communities, St.Thomas will be one of the cities that the Pan Am Flame comes through! In honor of this exciting event there will be a torch relay community celebration, which includes two sponsored "fun run" TRAIN RIDES offered at NO COST courtesy of Railway City Tourism and the St. Thomas Economic Development Corporation! The celebration will include speeches, entertainment from our local elementary schools, and most importantly the arrival of the torch. When: Wednesday June 17th, from 4:30-6:30pm Where: The L&PS Corridor, 605 Talbot Street, St. Thomas
It is that time again! Canada Day is right around the corner and this year it lies on a Tuesday! But if you think a mid-week holiday is going to stop all full-blown celebration of our country independence then you are wrong! This year's Canada Day celebration holds true to tradition being held in Pinafore Park and will feature a full day of events: like an appearance by Frozen's Queen Elsa who will be singing and telling stories, pony rides, face painting, and Reptile Zoo presentation that will be happening in the band shell that day.
Also expect to see a full vendor's area featuring clothing, accessories, weight loss, jewelry, baked goods (who doesn't like baked goods!), teas, flags, toys, and so much more! All day food will be served from Kuma Catering, Lions, Kinsmen, Rotary and Optimist Clubs. But, that's if you are still hungry after the Lion's Club annual pancake breakfast! As always the splash pad will be flowing, the play ground will be jammin', and the myFM cruiser will be on scene to make the day complete! And all of this is just a taste of what is to be offered, so check out the handy schedules below and make an itinerary for yourself! |
