Earlier this summer, we showed some love to our farmers’ markets. This week we wanted to take the time to introduce to you local farm stands and shops!
St. Thomas is surrounded by countless fields, providing local farmers with plenty of space to grow produce, curate cheese, meats and so much more. These farmers and families dedicate endless hours to providing us with local, organic and delicious food for our community. In order to share it all with the community, many of them have access points right where they grow their food! Why is it important to support these farm stands and stores? By buying local, the money you spend goes back directly to your community! You also support these local businesses and allow them to continue to do what they love. Let’s take a look into the lovely businesses here in St. Thomas and surrounding areas!
Here in St. Thomas and Elgin County, we are lucky to be a part of such an agriculturally dense and diverse area. All around us are great local businesses, farms, and food producers and we have the special opportunity of celebrating them through our local farmers’ markets. We are lucky to have two large markets in the area: Wildflower Farmers’ Market and Horton Farmers’ Market.
Let’s take a deeper look into both of these wonderful spaces and meet some of the amazing local vendors! Today we begin with the Wildflowers Farmers Market. SHOP THE BOXES | SUPPORT LOCAL | GIVE BACK TO CATFISH CREEK CONSERVATION
Having to change direction like pretty much everyone else out there this past year, and moving on from in-person events, Relish has been working to forge stronger connections between you and our local farmers and food producers. We have an incredible array of locally made goods in St. Thomas and Elgin County. Goods that come from the land surrounding us and from the hands of passionate locals.
At Railway City Tourism we often hear about the Elgin Hiking Trail. We also get asked lots of questions about the trail. Having never actually hiked it before, it's really hard to answer any questions, no matter how familiar we are with the map!

St. Thomas pride is everywhere. You can feel it at community events, see it on display as you drive through the city, and even explore its presence on social media!
In fact, Instagram is currently home to over 24,000 posts marked with the #stthomasproud hashtag, and another 1,900 posts with the #explorerailwaycity hashtag. These searchable (and also follow-able!) hashtags help represent the beautiful city we get to call home. Next time you decide to show your St. Thomas pride on social media, add one of these hashtags to your photos so other people get to see just how great St. Thomas is! We are excited to introduce you to a few locals with a flair for capturing their St. Thomas pride through photography and truly embody what it means be #stthomasproud. Barn quilts are large wooden squares painted to resemble a quilt block that has significance for the location in which it is found. They are usually hung on the side of barns by the land's owners, who create the design based on the properties’ heritage. When there are many quilts in the same area, they become a trail which you can follow, discovering each location’s depiction of their history. The purpose of these barn quilts are to tell a story, draw attention to unmarked historical places, make a themed trail, and lead visitors from one site to the next.
Elgin County is home to its very own barn quilt trail consisting of many barn quilts, all of which depict a different story about Elgin’s history. Here are the locations and stories of some of these barn quilts, which you can visit yourself to learn more! |
