The Clay Oven - A Taste of [downtown] St. Thomas

There's something comforting about the smell of garlic, spice, and warmth drifting through the air as you walk down a quieter stretch of downtown St. Thomas. It's a scent that feels like home, even if you're not quite sure why. And if you follow it, chances are you'll find yourself at the doorstep of The Clay Oven—a restaurant that, while still relatively new to the local food scene, feels like it's always been here.

The story behind The Clay Oven isn't flashy or overly polished, but that's part of its charm. It's real. Owner Sayed Sadeque didn't decide to open a restaurant on a whim. His journey began in 2010 after he moved to Canada from the UK, where his family was involved in the restaurant industry. In 2015, he opened his first location in Acton, Ontario—built from the ground up with his own hands and vision. It did well. Really well, actually. And that success sparked the idea to expand. St. Thomas, with its tight-knit and supportive community, turned out to be the perfect next chapter.

Now, tucked in on Talbot Street, The Clay Oven offers something more than just food. It offers an invitation—to slow down, to connect, and maybe to try something new.

The menu leans heavily into authentic Indian traditions. This isn't fast food dressed up with curry powder—it's the real deal: fresh ingredients, recipes rooted in family and culture, and a genuine love of hospitality. You can taste that care in every bite. Sayed's personal favourites? The Garlic Beef Chili and the Chicken Tikka Masala, which he suggests pairing with their freshly baked garlic naan.

Enjoying a meal is easy at The Clay Oven - the friendly staff are eager to provide recommendations and explain unfamiliar dishes. The mint sauce with samosa was a particular treat. If you want the opportunity to try a few things, visit for lunch and enjoy their four-course lunch special for only $ 17.99, featuring a vegetable samosa, chana masala, and a choice of Butter Chicken, Chicken Korai (my favourite of the dishes I tried, but the Tikka Masala was incredible as well), or Alo Gobi, served with rice or naan. The meats were tender and so full of flavour. Our party of two had plenty of leftovers for another meal.
✨ Diners' tip for spicier dishes is to opt for the coconut naan - the hint of sweetness pairs well with the heat from the peppers.

And while the food is reason enough to visit, it's not the only one. What makes this place stand out is how it feels. There's no rush. No gimmick. Just a quiet pride in serving food that means something in a space shaped with intention and heart.

When asked what he loves most about being in St. Thomas, Sayed doesn't hesitate: the community. It's something you hear often in this town, but when he says it, it lands differently. Because he's not just saying it—he's living it. The Clay Oven isn't just another restaurant added to the growing downtown scene. It's part of a larger story about what it means to belong somewhere. To be welcomed in and to want to give something back.

So whether you're craving something new, need a warm place to land after a busy day, or are just curious about what really good Chicken Tikka Masala tastes like, The Clay Oven is worth a visit.

And maybe—if you're lucky—you'll leave with more than just a full belly. Maybe you'll leave feeling like you've discovered a place that quietly makes this city feel even more like home.
