Art Centre History

Interest in the founding of a local gallery first developed in 1968, when the National Gallery of Canada sent requests across Canada for financial assistance. When the request was received by the University Women’s Club of St. Thomas, a creative arts committee was created. After considering the request of the National Gallery of Canada, the University Women’s Club decided that Elgin County needed its own Art Gallery.

The idea for the first Art Auction of Elgin County was conceived. Solicitation of donations began immediately with members of the creative arts committee visiting local artists of St. Thomas and Elgin County to ask for contributions of their own works of art for the auction. Many well known local artists donated their works for the sale.

During the course of gathering art for the auction, the committee discovered that art was flourishing and there was an immediate need for a gallery.

The University Women’s Club had raised enough money at the art auction to start a collection of paintings that would form the nucleus of a Permanent Collection for Elgin. What had begun as just a dream of art for Elgin was now an exciting reality.

The Pairs

The Pairs are a female fronted folk pop group with deep roots in London Ontario, powered by 3 classically trained vocalists and a former punk rock drummer. Their unique blend of harmony and rhythm will hug your eardrums and force you to dance. Their storytelling and honest songwriting provides an uplifting audience experience you won't want to miss.
