Here in St. Thomas we have many amazing local businesses that offer amazing food and drink options.
We wanted to dig a little deeper into what makes some of these unique establishments tick, and today we are highlighting Steelhead Food Co. located on the North end of the city at 5 Barrie Blvd.  Steelhead Food Co. created an innovative business where they operate a public Fish & Seafood Market, in addition to the wholesale aspect of their business. We caught up with Meg McTaggart, one of the co-owners, to find the story behind Steelhead.

1) Why did you choose to start Steelhead Food Co. as a food market, in addition to being a food supplier?
My husband Matt and I  took a leap of faith from our previous professions in order to start our own dream in 2015. We started as a “box in, box out” distribution business and then expanded into a processing facility a few years later. The idea of a fish market was really sparked by friends and family asking if they could buy our fish to cook at home! We transformed a box storage room within our facility into our existing fish and seafood market that is currently open to the public 7 days a week!

2) What do you hope is the impact Steelhead has on the St. Thomas community?
There aren’t a lot of fresh fish retail or wholesale businesses in this area of the world! We hope that we can fill a void within our community by providing high quality fish and seafood products that are processed in-house and are part of an extremely fresh rotation. We source our fish, seafood, shellfish, and crustaceans from as close to home as possible; and, we are proud to offer a huge line of local freshwater and Canadian saltwater products! Additionally, we take pride in providing people with a plethora of knowledge about our products whenever asked.
3) Since you've opened, what has been your favourite part of operating your business?
A family owned and operated business has instant rewards. Matt and I remind ourselves to take a step back and look at the business we have built together, as a team. We also remind ourselves how lucky we are to be a part of a supportive community and we are well aware that our business wouldn’t exist without the support of those around us.

4) What is some exciting news you are proud of?
In collaboration with the Port Stanley Lions Club and the Port Stanley Legion, we would like to thank those who attended the 2022 Port Stanley Lions’ Club Lobsterfest Event! Collectively, we were able to donate over $10,000.00 to Elgin Hospice. We are so proud to have been a part of such a successful event for such a worthy cause. Our community is amazing!
