Here in St. Thomas we are lucky to be surrounded by an agriculturally dense and diverse area with amazing local producers. Supporting these businesses has never been easier! With two large markets in the area: Wildflower Farmers’ Market and Horton Farmers’ Market, you have two opportunities to get out and love local each and every week.

Today we are taking a deeper look at the Horton Farmers' Market! Read up on our post about Wildflowers Farmer's Market here.

A little about Farmers' Markets...

Farmers’ markets follow the structure of Farm-to-table, which means the food you purchase comes directly from its growing source. During market season, not only can you connect a face with your local food producers and get to know them, but you can learn more about your food and how it’s grown/made.

Farmers’ markets have an intimate relationship with our local economy as they provide farmers and producers the opportunity to sell their products. Due to farmers’ markets, we as community members, get to taste real flavours of local produce! There is so much of the farmers’ market community that is beneficial to farms/food producers, but also to you!

About the Horton Market

Horton Farmers’ Market is located in historic downtown St. Thomas. The grounds attract those to the downtown core, just off Talbot Street. The market location stems deep into the railway history of St. Thomas, as the location was selected due to its proximity to the CASO Station. The market spans over two outdoor pavilions and an in-door building, allowing for coverage in any weather conditions.

Over the season, many vendors attend providing fresh produce, bread, canned goods and more. In the middle of the market, there is a row of picnic tables with umbrellas to allow for customers to sit, enjoy the environment and eat some of the delicious products available. Market manager, Vicki Asher, has done a fabulous job organizing the vendors and making the weekly event so welcoming. It’s going to be a great market season!

We were able to connect with Vicki, and she explained to us why and what the Horton Market does!  She said, “The Horton Farmers’ Market is a best-in-class market destination that promotes civic pride, shapes local culture and supports the regional economy by providing access to high quality food producers, craftspeople and artisans. Each season, we strive to source all our vendors and products from within a 60km radius of the market, ensuring our community has access to the very best fruits, vegetables, flowers, meats, cheese, and hand-crafted items our region has to offer.”
