I was hoping to work with my sister (also an artist) to complete one design. Also, am I paying 1000 dollars or getting paid 1000 dollars, I am unsure. Thank you for emailing me this opportunity, I am excited to submit a design!

Hi Taylor, thanks for your interst! The $1000 is payment to the artist, you do not pay to take part in this. If you could email [email protected] with a draft of your design as well as an artist statement, that would be great!

I strongly disagree with the idea of this project. There is enough graffiti sprayed on railway cars without encouraging, indeed, PAYING someone to do it. I understand you want to encourage art, but surely there is a better "canvas" to use than a piece of railway history.

Hi Steve, thank you for you concern regarding the railway history in our great city. The boxcars in question are storage cars for the museum, and are not historic artifacts. As well, the artwork that is going on the cars will cover existing graffiti and will not be in a graffiti style and is being done by talented local artists. We encourage you to visit the cars when the artwork is complete in September.

Do you have any photos of the completed work? I see a few photos here:

This is a terrible, terrible idea that is inconsistent with the primary mission of any museum of historical preservation. Please do not do this! Whether you realist it or not, those cars are historical artifacts and should be treated as such.

Hi Paul, thank you for your concern. We also appreciate historical preservation and commend the efforts of the Railway Museum. The boxcars in question are storage cars for the museum, and are not historic artifacts and have not been accessioned into their collection.

Many railfans have been discussing this in various online forums, and most strongly oppose this desecration, and your contention that these are not historical artifacts. This will not win you friends. Leave a Reply. |
