Big things are happening in St. Thomas as the city prepares for the 2020 BC Eastern Qualifier, that will be held in the historic CASO Station. Maria Fiallos of Las Chicas Del Cafe and Streamliners Espresso Bar spearheaded the effort to bring this exciting event to St. Thomas. And it took a lot of effort – a Qualifying round has never taken place outside a major city like Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver, so Maria had to campaign for St. Thomas as an ideal location.
Hosted by Las Chicas Del Cafe and community partners, this will be a monumental event for the region and for the Canadian Chapter of the SCA. Maria has organized an entire weekend surrounding the event - with dinners, keynote speakers, throw-downs, transportation, accommodation and activities all taken into consideration. The competition - nicknamed ‘Steam’ - will be open to the public for viewing.

Extracted from trees in which the beginning starch is converted into sugar from the rising sap, maple syrup enjoys a unique harvesting process. As late Winter and early Spring approaches, the harvesting of maple syrup poses opportunity for activities and festivals!

Calendars are bursting in the twenty-first century with freshly-invented events and quirky shared days of observance. Love or hate the trend, there is something for everyone. In St. Thomas, we first trained our eyes on May 28th — National Hamburger Day! Seriously though, why not celebrate this tasty touchstone of North American life?
Early in April, the team at Railway City Tourism challenged the crew at STEAM City Media to explore St. Thomas and find the best burgers in the city. It may feel as though Spring has just arrived, but this Saturday, May 12 the Horton Farmers' Market opens and ushers in the first sign of summertime in St. Thomas. The Horton Farmers’ Market was founded in 1878 and is named after Ed Horton, a former St. Thomas mayor who donated land for the market site. The Horton Farmers’ Market, located on Manitoba Street, is a community-driven market with over 35 vendors providing the people of St. Thomas with fresh produce, baked goods, flowers, home decor, delicious meals, and much more. Most importantly, the market offers the city of St. Thomas a sense of community. Vicki Asher, the Horton Market Manager, has big plans for the market this year; “I’m working hard to make the market an experience each and every week - I’ll have buskers, children activities, and artisans with interactive displays, artists, wool spinners, and pottery” says Asher.

If you follow us over on Instagram you might have seen the announcement already about our partnership with Railway City Brewing Co. to create limited edition bottles for the Railway City Arts Crawl. Artists participating in the crawl submitted their work for a chance to be featured on the labels and the winning designs are now available in store at the brewery!
The selection panel chose a total of twelve artists this year and you can pick up packs of 6 ($20) or get a full set of 12 ($35) while they last. It's a great mosaic of the talent featured throughout the event and a fantastic way to commemorate your trip to the crawl!
