Your St. Thomas Winter Bucket List

Has anyone ever heard the story of the cow, the buffalo and the storm?

Let's start with the cow.

When a storm is brewing a cow can sense it coming in and will start to run in the opposite direction. As one would expect, the cow cannot possibly outrun the storm. What happens as they continue to run, is they end up running along with the storm. They have completely managed to maximize the pain, time and stress brought by that storm.
Enter the buffalo.

Buffalo wait for the storm to roll towards them and then they charge directly into it once it arrives. By running at the storm they run straight through it. Minimizing the amount of pain, time and stress they experience from that storm.

This is a great metaphor for all sorts of human experiences, but for our purposes here - if you haven't already guessed it - is that WINTER is the storm.

So the question to you is, if that storm is coming no matter what - do you want to be a cow or a buffalo?

LET'S WARM UP!

1 • WINE TOURS 🍷
You’ll get up close and personal with the vineyards, processing area, fermentation and barrel rooms. The tour finishes with a sampling of wines - all in the good company of one of our resident winemakers. This unique perspective gives you a fresh insight into each and every one of the products. Tours generally run on Saturday's, based on staff availability. Advance notice is required due to COVID-19.

NOTE: If tours are not available try ordering delivery from the winery and ask for a winemaker's recommended mix selection!

2 • HIKING & SNOWSHOEING 🚶🏾
We have some incredible trails in and around St. Thomas. Some are more rugged, like what you might find at Dan Patterson or Dalewood. Those trails are great for breaking out the snowshoes! For those of you looking for something a little more manageable, the Whistlestop Trail in St. Thomas is maintained throughout the Winter.

Find your trail adventure here!

3 • ENJOY WARM BEVVIES ☕
Warm yourself from the inside out with some delicious warm bevvies! We recommend the S'mores Hot Chocolate from Streamliners Espresso Bar (pictured) or a cappucino from The Ice Box paired with brownies from their Fire Box Cafe.

*please note - if you wish to consume ice cream in the winter months - do not let us or anyone else stop you! 🍨

 4 • TAKE A YOGA CLASS 🧘
Our yoga studios have been busy making sure their studios are safe and clean! Check them out to see their winter calendars. For those looking for an extra injection of warmth, find hot yoga classes at Tru & for those who'd like to try from home, both Exhale and Tru offer many virtual classes.

5 • MAPLE TAFFY DIY ❄️
Try this simply DIY at home with the kids - or the young at heart! The instructions are simple: Find some clean snow. Fill a container with compacted snow and leave outside. Boil your maple syrup in a saucepan, the perfect temp is 115 °C but you can eyeball it. With a metal spoon, pour the boiling syrup over the snow. Use wooden popsicle sticks to collect the syrup. Enjoy! Pro tip: add a little water if syrup is too hard in the snow.

Where to find local syrup: Briwood / Berry Hill

6 • TRY CURLING 🥌
The quintessential Canadian activity! We have an active and historic club right here in St. Thomas. The good old roaring game of curling began in St Thomas in the early 1870's on a pond off William St, near the site of the present day Foodland store. The present day club was founded in 1955 and is still operating.

NOTE: If covid restrictions are in place, visit the website and check out all the different leagues on offer and start planning for next season!
